As there are so many different types of Podcasts out there on the web, how do you decide what content you should be sharing with your audience.
I would also ask these three questions to anyone who asks me what their podcast should be about?
- What are you passionate about?
- What are you knowledgeable about?
- What would you current audiences like to listen to?
The best Podcasts are the combination of all three of answers. You have to be passionate and knowledgeable about the topic you are talking about and it’s got to be something that your audience would like to listen to.
The good news is that you might well already have the content!
If you have blogs, videos, live streams, online courses or e-books in your marketing mix, you might well have the content need for a Podcast or a Podcast Series.
So, working out what content is a key part of planning your show!
Here are a few benefits to doing this-
By planning your content and what your’e going to be sharing for your first 4-6 episodes, you’ll get a really idea on what your Podcast will sound like. Also by thinking about your audience and placing them in the center of your show, they will get more value from the podcast and will be more likely to share and listen to more.
There is also a time saving element to using your own content. For instance, if you have an online course that is split into 8 existing parts, you could easier convert those into an 8 episode series. Or…. if you have an e-book about your chosen industry, you could happily create an individual series based on the individual chapters.
So as you can see…. getting content for your podcast isn’t as hard as it sounds!
Now is also a great time to decide if you will be having guests on your show and if so, what will they talk about. Remember to keep your audience in the font of your mind when choosing guests and ask yourself this… does this guest provide value to my audience? If the answer is yes, keep them and if the answer if no… bin them.
How to do this in 5 simple steps-
- Answer the three questions above and see what topics come to the surface
- Look at your existing content, could some of it be used?
- Start planning your first 4-6 episodes to see how the content fits
- Decide on a shortlist of 10 guests you would like on the show. Reach out to them to be on your show
- Revisit your target audience list and see if these shows and guest will provide value to you audience
What do you need to get started?
So all you need to do to get started is 15-30 minutes, your existing content and an open mind to explore and create your show. Don’t worry if this plan changes over time, that’s ok as long as you keep the audience in the centre of the Podcast.
